I love riding bikes with Amie and the boys. I really do. It is great to get out as a family and get moving. The problem is, it does not very closely resemble exercize. Which is what I need if I am going to get the Garmin by the end of June.
Yesterday we set off from Draper park and headed South along the Porter Rockwell trail. It had been overcast and rainy most of the day and we almost gave up on the ride. The weather cleared up in the afternoon and we decided to pack our rain gear and take our chances.
The trail is a paved mixed use path with a dirt equestrian path running mostly parrellel to it. About three quarters of a mile into the ride, Xan started to complain about being tired. It was basically miserable. He settled down after a bit, but it was still very slow going.
Xan decied to try some mountain biking and took off on the horse trial. I followed him with Nick attached on the trailer bike. Xan seemed to have a lot of fun on that trail and the complaining stopped.
San and I spent a fair amount of time on the dirt trail and Nick was loving it. We crossed Traverse Ridge road after getting off the dirt when Amie noticed Nick's tire was flat. Damn, we did not have a spare for him. We decided to try a patch on it. Thirty minutes later, we were moving again. We decided to turn around and head home because it was getting late. One day we will follow that trail to see how far it goes but we will have to get a much earlier start. This is the third time we have turned aroud at Traverse Ridge Road.
On the way home it started to sprinkle on us so we got a bit wet. Nick, for the second ride in a row, drank all 1.5 liters of his Camelbak and we had to stop to pee about every 5 minutes. At least I know his kidneys are working well.
Today:

Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail
Today Amie, Nick, Xan and Tasia joined me on a little bike ride. We parked in the little town of Coalville and rode our bikes towards Park City. It was a tough day for Xan. He didn't have much fun. The trail was hardpack dirt, but it had rained recently and there was a lot of mud. It was a challenge for me to ride in the mud, so I'm sure it was a bugger for him.
We started training Tasia to ride in the trailer behind Amie. She did OK. She was a bit skiddish at first, but after she ran for 5 or 6 miles, she warmed up to the idea of kicking back in the trailer.
Nick rode behind me on the detatchable tandem trailer bike we recently purchased. It is a great bike for him. He can peddle when he wants or just coast. He loves it and I get to spend quality time with him chatting while we ride.
We only made it about 5.5 miles on the trail before Xan was done. We had to turn around and head back.
All in all, it was a good day outdoors with the family. It beats sitting on my ass in front of the TV.

I should be getting the Oregon by the end of June.
I have a deal with Amie; I lose 10% off my fat ass and she will buy me a Garmin Oregon 300. I have been biking like crazy so far this summer and the weight seems to be coming off pretty good. I think that by the end of June, I should have the handy little gizmo in my possession. We have another deal in place as well. More on that later.
